PMC has a sewage job on hand

Pune, February 21: The general body meeting of Pune Municipal Corporation witnessed a row over the effluents and sewage water being released into the Mutha-Mula Rivers on a large-scale. However, Municipal Commissioner Praveensinh Pardeshi admitted that at present the PMC only has half the number of sewage treatment plants (STP) needed for the city.

Mayor Rajlaxmi Bhosale even called for White Paper about the entire situation from the civic administration, to which the commissioner asked for a “minimum period” of one month.

Police team heads for Kolkata to get Desai

Pune, February 21: A Five-member team of the Pune police has been deputed to Kolkata equipped with the order of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Pune, to procure the custody of runaway ISI agent Saeed Desai, who was nabbed in Kolkata a few days back. However, the Kolkata court has asked for some clarification in the order, which has unexpectedly delayed the process, said Anti-Extortion cell chief inspector Bhanupratap Barge.

KCB employee dies in mishap

Pune, February 21: An employee of the Khadki Cantonment Board lost his life after being hit by a truck of the Maratha Light Infantry outside the board’s premises, on Thursday noon. Shantkumar Anthoniappa (37), who worked in the engineering section was preparing to leave on his cycle for his quarters when the incident occurred.

While the Khadki police has registered a case of rash and negligent driving, the 22-year-old truck driver has been taken into custody by the military police who will be handing him over to the Khadki police by tomorrow.

Kirrtane falls short

Pune, February 21: Former Davis Cupper Nitten Kirrtane turned back the clock, but couldn't do the same with his fortunes and make it memorable losing the Super Singles final of the 59th Indian Club-Bahrain Financing Company Open Tennis Tournament recently.

In the final, Kirrtane was tamed by Fahad Al Saad of Saudi Arabia 5-7, 4-6.

The Super Singles event in the tournament had six invited Davis Cup players from Kuwait, Saudia Arabia, Bahrain and India wherein two groups of 3 players each with the top-two making the semis.

Ayush comes of age

Pune, February 21: Rohan Panchal, Aditya Gokhale, Ayush Prabhune, Siddanth Bantia, Liyaan Akkalkotkar, Rucha Moghe, Snehal Mane won their respective age groups in the XV RCBC 'Open' Junior Tennis Championships organised on the club tennis courts, on Thursday.

In the boys Under-10 event Ayush Prabhune scraped past Aryan Rai 9-2; while in the girls Snehal Mane put out Saloni Ghodke challenge 9-3. Last year Ayush Prabhune had won the Under-8 title; this year he continued to keep his winning run intact.

Pune, February 20: Twentysix brand new computers, along with their servers, lie unpacked in their boxes, in a small room on the ground floor of the Joint Charity Commissioner’s office building on Dhole-Patil Road, while three Charity Commissioners continue to grapple with bulky paperwork on the floors above. Paucity of staff to operate the machines is reportedly the reason for not using the computers, as a request for typists to the Charity Commissioner Headquarters in Mumbai is awaiting a response, according to senior officials at the office.

Pune, February 20: Lack of qualified professionals in its engineering department is a cause of concern for the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Limited (PMPML). Out of the 1,500 -strong force in its engineering department, only about six per cent are qualified with the basic Industrial Training Institute (ITI) diplomas. PMPML’s engineering department officials say that this affects the quality of work.

Forestry dept’s eco-package for schools

Pune, February 20: School children can now look forward to environmental education through eco friendly parks as the State Social Forestry Department is all set to revamp the 29 nurseries spread across all districts of the state to convert them into national green corps parks. “In 2001, the forest ministers of all states in the country met at Coimbatore where they resolved to spread environmental education by conducting orientation for students. This was under the scheme National Green Corps,” said Prakash Thosre, director, Social Forestry, Maharshtra.

Mayor, corporators to meet over water scarcity

Pune, February 20: With mercury levels rising, Mayor Rajlaxmi Bhosale has agreed to convene a special general body meeting to discuss the issue of water scarcity with corporators representing scarcity-hit areas within the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) limits.

Leader of House, Anil Bhosale pointed out the PMC’s failure to stick to their commitment of resolving the issue water scarcity at a faster pace. “The problem is likely to aggravate this summer, and the issue needs to be tackled with proper planning,” Congress leader Ulhas Bagul said.

Pune, February 20: The Information Technology (IT) industry has registered exports of over Rs 15,000 crore each from the city for the last two consecutive years. But it pays the Pune Municipal Corporation a measly Rs 10 crore a year by way of tax. The IT industry has the State government to thank for the IT policy that allows its property tax to be levied as per residential rates and not commercial rates as in the case of other industries. The tenure of this five-year policy ends in four months.
