Augusta Woman says Baby Burned in Scalding Hot Water can Survive

A two-year-old Augusta boy was listed in fair condition Monday night at the Joseph M. Still Burn Center at Doctor's Hospital. Friday NBC Augusta told you the boy's baby sitter, Stephanie Adams, was charged with child cruelty after investigators say she put him in a hot bath.

The boy, Demontrez Clark, has third degree burns on his buttocks, genitals, legs and fingers. Investigators say he was burned in water that reached 144-degrees. That temperature could easily kill a baby, but an Augusta woman says she's living proof that he can make it through this tragedy.

Jen Hartley has a similar story to baby Clark. She was burned in a hot bath at just 15-months old. Doctors told her family she would die or never walk again, but today she's alive and calls herself a walking miracle.

"I was 15-months old and my mom was giving me a bath.iuseyhrw She went to answer the phone and I bumped the hot water. It was set at 180 degrees," said Hartley.

The scalding hot water burned the toddler on more than 51-percent of her body. Doctors said she wouldn't make it through the night, but Jen Hartley says her great - grandmother intervened.

"She was a strong woman of faith and when they told her to say goodbye to her only great-grandchild, she went in the room and lifted me up to God and started praying and that's why I'm here today," said Hartley.

Hartley had a bumpy road ahead. She had about 117 surgeries between toddler-hood and adulthood to remove scar tissue as her body grew.

Despite the hurdles Hartley says she is now living a very meaningful life. She's a Nationally Certified Massage therapist, one of very few in the nation who practices Burn Massage Therapy. She says it helps relieve pain and itching in burn victims. She uses it to help burn victims all over the world, including little children who have overcome the same obstacles she once faced.
She wants others to know they can overcome too.

"You can have a child burned 100% over their body who goes on to live a better life than someone who was never burned at all," said Hartley.

Hartley is working with the Joseph M. Still Burn Center at Doctors Hospital to institute burn massage therapy into the hospital's rehabilitation plan.
